CANADA 2006

We are pleased to be able to present a new set of photographs from our extremely enjoyable holiday in Toronto, Canada, in January 2006.  You can see a few photographs from around Torontoand, of particular interest, The CN Tower, The Canadian Broadcasting Corporation (CBC) Broadcasting Centre, plus Niagara and Niagara Falls and Dog Sledding at Winterdance in the Haliburton Mountains.  Here

Now, why VEGETABLES and other stuff?

I (Mike) often get accused of being a vegetable. That's so unfair. So before we get to the other stuff, I will just explain: What is true is that I am a vegetarian -  I don't eat meat, and have not done so since 1988. Mind you there are some poor souls who believe vegetarians can eat fish or chicken, as chicken isn't really meat is it??!  But "It is fowl", some may cluck.  I think the term for only eating chicken (or very little meat) is 'demi-veg', a bit daft if you ask me!  Surely you are either vegetarian or you are not, however I suppose the term demi-veg makes these half-way-housers feel more healthy, which cannot be bad!

My very favourite meal is Vegetable Dhansak cooked to a Madras (hot) strength. It's a lentil based curry dish available from all fine quality balti and curry houses.  YUM!

If want to try an occasional alternative to meat or even become a non-meat eater, then I can recommend a few alternatives.  Lentils are the obvious and popular choice (as in vegetable dhansak!) but there are many alternatives and here are a few :-

Tofu can be used plain or marinaded as a simple replacement for meat in most meat dishes.  Where the recipe stipulates chicken or lamb etc, just substitute Tofu.  Tofu very good for you too, and is available from most supermarkets and health food shops.

Another popular choice is Quorn, made from mushrooms, though you'd never know.  Quorn chunks and pieces and Quorn mince looks like and has the texture of meat and is a great direct replacement.

Other vegi-mince products are available such as RealEat mince and a range of products including mince from Linda McCartney, all very good!

You can also check out The Vegetarian Society  and  VIVA

It seems vegetarianism is so often associated with wearing sandals!  Having mentioned the footware, we really don't want to progress to the subject of a certain item of waterproof outdoor clothing, do we?

Anyway whether you prefer meat, fish or tofu- just make sure that you eat all your greens, otherwise "you'll never grow up to be strong and healthy", as you will remember your mum expaining, no doubt.

If you have been going to the burger bar too often and have forgotten what 'greens' look like, I have included a picture of a cabbage for good measure.  Or is that a picture of me?

A Cabbage
Now there's heathy, Isn't it?

Enough of vegetables!  What about this other stuff?  Please have a look at the subjects on the right hand panel.
